Community Impact

Bank of America, owner of 201 North Tryon, has always held a strong commitment to the Charlotte community.  Recognized as a leader in Charlotte, Bank of America has helped turn the center-city area into a lively, vibrant place to live and work.

201 North Tryon adds to the vitality of the center city through its design and placement.  The building is not a skyscraper that snubs street-level activity or turns a cold shoulder to mixed-use development.  The building features a pedestrian-friendly frontage with planters, water fountains and street-level retail.  This was accomplished by rotating the building's alignment so the building faces the street at a 45-degree angle rather than being placed squarely on the site.  The 45-degree alignment provides better views for street-level tenants including The Capital Grille, and Zink.  In doing so, 201 North Tryon not only meets the needs of its tenants, but also contributes to creating an active, lively city.

201 North Tryon has supported many local organizations and charities since opening in December of 1997.  Many fundraising events, relief programs, health awareness programs and blood drives have been held in the building.  Examples include events for the North Carolina Dance Theater and Carolinas Medical Center Children's Hospital Make a Wish Foundation; Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools school supplies drive; administering flu shots and blood tests to check cholesterol; Breast Cancer Awareness Day; American Red Cross blood drives; and collecting donations for local food banks, the women's shelter, Coats for Kids, the men's shelter and various other local charities.

201 North Tryon also supports local artists by displaying artwork throughout the building's public areas.  The 10+level, 1,030-space garage features a "way-finding package" created by Charlotte-based Brinkley Design, which was hired by Bank of America to develop a graphically attractive, educational and functional directional system.  The package features 28-by-10-foot drawings of automobiles from different decades.  This unique design not only softens the parking garage environment, but also helps direct building patrons with icon cars of the decade representing different floors of the parking deck.  (For example, the 1959 pink Cadillac represents the fifth floor - 1959 providing a mental link to fifth).

The building's lobby houses two display cases filled with artwork from local museums and galleries.  The exhibits, which change on a quarterly basis, serve as advertising tools for galleries and museums and help them market their businesses.  The displays also create an inviting and distinctive meeting place in the lobby for visitors and tenants.

The city and state governments are committed to reducing the amount of solid waste taken to landfills, 201 North Tryon contributes to this effort.  The building's recycling program captures paper, cardboard, plastic, glass, aluminum and phone books.  Each tenant has received a glass, aluminum and plastic recycling container for all break room located in their leased premises.  The janitorial staff empties these containers as needed into a large recycling center container at the loading dock.  When the container is full, it is taken to the city recycling operation.  This helps the building meet government objectives and tenants reduce operating expenses.

Minority business development is a priority for 201 North Tryon.  Building Management has directed the spending of discretionary dollars to give small, minority-owned companies the opportunity to work in an environment that historically has been reserved only for large service providers and major corporations.  Because of Building Management's positive references, other Charlotte building management companies also have started to use these same small, minority-owned firms.
